Currently, Thammasat University Hospital (TUH) has the ability to provide comprehensive healthcare that encompasses all medical subspecialties. Within the last decade, we have seen a continuous rise in both outpatient and inpatient numbers at TUH. The number of inpatient and outpatient referrals from both local and out of country healthcare facilities has steadily increased, ranging up to 2,500-3,000 complex patient cases per month. Inpatient beds at TUH can accommodate up to 574 patients however, despite having a vast number of beds available to patients, TUH can only accommodate 17-28% of all referrals due to allocation limitations. Given that Thammasat University Hospital stands as a tertiary regional medical center that provides to patients from the lower northern and upper central regions of Thailand and is interconnected by rapid transportation infrastructures, expanding our services is the next obvious step.
Multiple factors have demonstrated a need to not only expand our services but to do so in a class-leading way. Advancements in urbanization, demographic shifts towards an aging population, the increasing severity and chronicity of illnesses, national healthcare policy changes such as nationwide comprehensive healthcare coverage and our expansion into the ASEAN economic sector as a medical healthcare hub in Asia, all point towards expansion being the next step. Doing so enables us to fulfill the needs of our country and region. The Board of Directors at TUH recognizes the ever-growing demand for advanced medical centers, particularly from University Hospitals that have the resources available to invest in personnel and equipment. As a result, TUH wants to be at the forefront by becoming a Super Tertiary University Hospital, with aims to establish an Excellence Center to promote a higher standard of care whilst simultaneously expanding our services to provide a comprehensive and effective public healthcare service. Doing so also builds an environment for physicians and researchers to learn and practice, further improving the healthcare sector for the future. This endeavor is geared towards supporting four main missions: (1) healthcare services, (2) health promotion, (3) research, and (4) education
Based on the demand for healthcare and changes in our socio-economic landscape, the construction of Thammasat Advanced Medical Center at Thammasat University Hospital was initiated to intend to solve these problems. The objective of this project is to elevate and provide comprehensive patient care. We intend to do so by expanding our outpatient services to accommodate an additional 1,000-1,500 outpatients per day and add an additional 100-150 inpatients beds. This project enables us to offer specialized disease care, be involved in health promotion as well as further develop medical research and innovation strategies.
This project builds upon the foundational frameworks currently carried out at Thammasat Medical Hospital. The design and management of the new advanced medical center will be integrated with existing hospital infrastructure with a emphasis on facilitatation of connectivity and shared equipment sharing, creating one interconnected hospital complex. It is envisaged that the initial estimated investment for the project will be approximately 2.3 billion baht consisting of construction costs and medical equipment of 1.8 billion and 500 million baht respectively.
